When the lungs are regularly exposed to irritants and viruses, respiratory illnesses are inevitable. It’s important to be aware of common respiratory illnesses to understand our risk of developing such ailments and to prevent ourselves and our loved ones from developing such ailments. There are a wide variety of respiratory illnesses, however, the most common are colds and flu, respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), bronchitis, and pneumonia, all of which have adverse effects on our overall health.
Respiratory Syncytial Virus
RSV is a common and contagious virus that infects the respiratory tract. Infants and people with weakened immune systems are more vulnerable to contracting and spreading the virus. People who have contracted this virus are usually contagious for 3 to 8 days, and rarely up to 4 weeks.
Most patients with mild RSV recover in 1 to 2 weeks, however, this is not the case for most infants and older adults. Patients with severe cases may need medications to help open airways and improve their breathing.
Bronchitis is the inflammation of the lining of the bronchial tubes which are the airways that lead to the lungs. The infection is caused by a virus, bacteria, or other irritants. When left untreated, the infection can travel from the airways to the lungs, causing Pneumonia. Acute and chronic bronchitis may show similar symptoms, including:
- Cough
- Production of mucus (sputum) — rarely, it may be streaked with blood
- Fatigue
- Shortness of breath
- Slight fever and chills
- Chest discomfort
This condition is an infection in the air sacs of one or both lungs causing the air sacs to be filled with fluid or pus. Patients with pneumonia may experience coughing with phlegm or pus, fever, chills, and difficulty breathing. Although it’s possible to have pneumonia without a cough or fever. Common symptoms of pneumonia include:
- Fever
- Shaking chills
- Shortness of breath
- Shallow breathing
- Sharp or stabbing chest pain
- Loss of appetite
- Nausea and vomiting
